What the 4.8 Is Made Of
Sub-scores published by the platform, not by us. The disagreement between them is the review.
Three sub-scores, and the transport one is the lowest. That score is measuring a public commuter railway in high summer, not the operator's own vehicle — there is no vehicle.
Price anatomy
What the Price Is Made Of
Against the $61.08 option — both start times cost the same. The gate price is the park's own, and the rail fare sits on top of it.
About 38% of the price is the park's own ticket. The other $38.01 covers the return Circumvesuviana fare — a few euros — the hired listening device and two hours of guiding. That leaves the guiding at roughly $19 an hour, which is what the walks inside Pompeii charge without moving you at all.
Two Check-in Times, One Price, and No Swapping Afterwards
Checked for 15 September 2026, one adult, in English. Two options came back and they are the same tour at two clocks — $61.08 either way, meeting at 09:30 or 10:15. The header shows $61 struck through to $58, a promotional figure that moves. What does not move is the rule that you cannot change the slot once booked.
Train departs 10:03 · check in 9:30 · 2 h guided · $61.08 · our pick
The original departure and the one we would take. Amelia checks you in at the Sorrento station at 09:30 in a red Belmare T-shirt, the train leaves at 10:03, and you are inside the gate before the middle of the day.
That matters more than it sounds. Pompeii is essentially unroofed, the walk is two hours on open ground, and the earlier slot puts the guided part before the worst of the afternoon.
Same price as the later one. The only thing you spend is the alarm.
Train departs 10:40 · check in 10:15 · 2 h guided · $61.08
Added for 2026 “due to high demand”, in the operator's own words, and priced identically. Forty-five minutes later, everything else the same.
The listing is blunt about one thing here: “due tour size restrictions you cannot change your booked slot.” Whichever you buy is the one you are on, so read the time before you press the button rather than after.
Worth taking if your morning in Sorrento does not start at nine, and no worse in any other respect.
| Leg | How | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Meet at Sorrento station | check-in with Amelia, red T-shirt | 09:30 |
| Sorrento → Pompei Scavi | Circumvesuviana train, ticket included | 45 min |
| Pompeii | guided, listening device provided | 2 h |
| Stay on, or go back | your ticket is valid all day, either way | your call |
| Pompei Scavi → Sorrento | the same line, same ticket | 45 min |
| The badge says | 2 hours | 2 h |
| The itinerary says | 2 h guided + 90 min of train | 3 h 30 |
The badge at the top of the listing and the itinerary block below it describe different lengths of day, and both are correct: two hours is the guided part, three and a half is the trip. The itinerary carries the usual “for reference only” note.
What Is in the Price, and What Is Pointedly Not
Included
Return train tickets, valid all day. Sorrento to Pompei Scavi and back on the Circumvesuviana. The all-day validity is the useful part: you may stay in Pompeii after the guide leaves and come home when you like.
The Pompeii entry ticket. Skip-the-line entry to the archaeological park, worth €20 at the gate, inside the price.
Two hours with an expert guide. The guided walk itself, and the thing the 4.9 guide score is attached to.
A listening device from Sorrento. In English only. The listing notes these are hired from an independent company and must be handed back to the guide at the end — so it is an errand, not a souvenir.
An assistant at the station. Amelia, in a red Belmare T-shirt, checks you in before the train. The listing warns twice that other similar tours leave from the same steps.
Not included
Hotel pickup. Stated three separate times on the listing, which suggests it is asked a lot. The tour goes from Sorrento station only and you get there yourself.
Any other starting station. Meeting anywhere but Sorrento, and train tickets from any other departure point, are both explicitly excluded. You cannot join at Pompeii.
Food and drink. Nothing is included. In summer, on this site, water is the one thing worth carrying rather than buying.
Step-free access. Not suitable for people with mobility impairments or wheelchair users, and separately not recommended for cruise passengers because of the train times.
A second entry to the park. The operator spells out what the park's rule means in practice: if you walk out at the end of the tour, going back in means buying the ticket again.
The Morning, and the Afternoon It Leaves You
- 09:30 or 10:15two check-in times, same price, no swapping
- Sorrento stationat the steps, by the old carriage and the newsagent
- 45 minthe Circumvesuviana to Pompei Scavi
- 2 hguided, with a listening device, entry included
- afterstay as long as you like — the rail ticket runs all day
- butleave the site and you pay to come back in
- 45 minthe same line home whenever you choose
The all-day rail ticket is what turns this from a two-hour tour into a day. The limit is the park's, not the operator's: one entry, no re-entry, so eat inside or eat afterwards, but do not walk out and expect to walk back.
The Clauses That Change Decisions
The badge says two hours; the itinerary adds ninety minutes of train. GetYourGuide prints “Duration 2 hours” at the top of the page. The itinerary block below it reads: Piazza Giovanni Battista de Curtis, train 45 minutes, guided tour 2 hours, train 45 minutes, back to Piazza Giovanni Battista de Curtis. Nothing is hidden — the two figures are simply in different blocks, and only one of them is the length of your morning.
The operator does not sell this tour on the park's free days. From its own FAQ: “Why is this tour not on sale when its free Entrance? (1st Sunday of Every Month/Bank Holidays). We do not sell our tour on these free days as, the Site tends to be over crowded so we avoid going on these days.” That is an operator turning down revenue on the busiest days of the year. We have read sixty-two listings and this is the only one that does it.
Your rail ticket is valid all day, so two hours is a beginning. “Opportunity to stay as long as you like after the 2hr guided tour as, your train tickets are Valid All Day.” Combined with the park ticket you already hold, that makes this a full day at Pompeii with a guided opening rather than a two-hour visit — provided you do not walk out of the gate.
You cannot change your slot once booked. “We offer 2 options when you book this tour one for 09:30 & one for 10:15 due tour size restrictions you cannot change your booked slot.” The two are identical in price and content, so the only cost of getting it wrong is the one you cannot undo.
The listing warns twice about other tours at the same steps. “At sorrento station there are many other tours similar to ours so its IMPORTANT: make sure you meet up with our Belmare Travel Member of staff, AMELIA.” And in Pompeii: “Please do not follow any other indications from third parties in Pompeii as these are touters.” Red T-shirt, Belmare logo, the name Amelia.
The train is the risk the operator will not carry. “Once on train, the stop is POMPEII SCAVI. Please do not leave the train at any other station. We cannot be held responsible if you board the wrong train or leave the train at the wrong station.” You travel with the guide, so this is a caution rather than a trap — but it is the operator drawing a line.
The listening devices are hired and must go back. “These are on Hire from an Independant Company, hence need to be returned to the guide at the end of the tour.” English only. If you were planning to keep it in your ear while you wander afterwards, you were not.
Children go free at the gate and still cost money here. “Free For Children, what does this mean? It Means the Entrance to Pompeii is Free not our activity you still need to buy child places as per age range.” Bring ID showing the child's age, because the free park entry is checked against a document.

What the Dossier Answers
How long does this actually take?
About three and a half hours, not two. The guided walk is two hours; the itinerary adds forty-five minutes of train each way. Both numbers are on the listing, in different blocks. If you are planning a Sorrento day around it, plan on being away from 09:30 until early afternoon at the earliest — longer if you take up the offer to stay.
Can I stay in Pompeii after the tour ends?
Yes, and this is the best thing about the product. Your park ticket is already paid and your return rail ticket is valid all day, so the guide leaving is not the end of your visit. The one rule: do not walk out of the gate, because Pompeii allows one entry and no re-entry, and the operator says so in plain words on its own includes list.
Where exactly do I meet them?
At Sorrento train station, by the steps where the old train carriage and the newsagent are. Look for Amelia in a red T-shirt with a Belmare Travel logo. The listing warns twice that several similar tours leave from the same place, so check the shirt rather than the sign. There is no hotel pickup and no meeting in Pompeii.
Which start time should I book?
The 09:30 if your morning allows it. The train leaves at 10:03 and you are guided before the heat peaks. The 10:15 meeting is a 2026 addition at the same price and is identical in every other respect. What matters is that you cannot switch afterwards: the listing says group-size restrictions make the booked slot final.
Is it worth it when I could take the train myself?
The train fare and the €20 ticket are perhaps half the price between them; the rest buys two guided hours and the certainty of getting on the right service on a line that is not signposted for tourists. If you are confident with the Circumvesuviana and only want entry, the ticket options are cheaper. If you want somebody to explain what you are looking at, this is the cheapest way to do it from Sorrento.
Why does the tour not run on the free Sunday?
Because the operator says the site is too crowded to do its job. Entry to Pompeii is free on the first Sunday of each month and on some public holidays; Belmare simply does not sell this tour on those dates. It is the only listing in our catalogue that opts out, and it is worth knowing when you plan — a free ticket on a day like that is a queue, not a bargain.
Is it suitable for cruise passengers?
The listing says no, and gives its reason: the train times are too restricted to guarantee you back at the port. It also lists cruise-ship guests as not suitable outright. Shore excursions are built around the ship's clock instead, and that is the difference that matters.
Is it suitable for wheelchair users?
No — the listing marks it not suitable for wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments. A commuter train, a station with steps and two hours on ancient paving is the reason. The accessible page covers what the market does offer, including the park's step-free route from the far entrance.
METHOD · Every price, start time, duration, inclusion and clause on this page was read off the product’s own booking page on 2026-08-14, with 2026-09-15 selected, English chosen and one adult in the party. We have not taken this tour and do not pretend to have. Nothing here came from the operator, and nobody at Belmare Travel srl saw this page before it went up. Our catalogue tables elsewhere carry $58 for this product, and that is not an error in either direction — $58 is the “from” price GetYourGuide advertised in the page header when we surveyed, while $61.08 is the cheapest option you can actually put a date against. That header figure is promotional and moves — on some products it is a struck-through discount that no bookable date matches. On 13 August we re-surveyed all 62 products in the catalogue option by option and found the same shape on 23 of them: the advertised floor counts options that are not on sale on the day you pick. We keep the advertised number in the tables so it matches what you see on arrival, and print the option price here. The review count in those tables, 2,593, is the same figure read on the same day. Euro figures on this page are converted at the European Central Bank reference rate of 13 August 2026, €1 = $1.1534; GetYourGuide bills at its own rate on the day. Prices drift weekly — what a Pompeii day costs keeps the wider arithmetic, and corrections go to contact.
