Mount Vesuvius from Pompeii

From Pompeii, a shuttle with the park ticket takes you up Vesuvius and back in about three hours: 40 minutes each way and about an hour and a half on the mountain. There is no public bus to the path and the park sells its timed ticket online only, so the shuttle is the simplest way up.

The volcano and the ruins share one day for many visitors, but they run on different rules: Pompeii on its own opening hours, Vesuvius on the national park's timed slots, a last access that moves with the month, and closures when the weather turns. This guide covers the ways up from Pompeii, the ticket, the walk, what you can see now that part of the rim is closed, and how to fit the volcano into a Pompeii day.

Chapter 01

How to Get from Pompeii to Mount Vesuvius

There is no public bus from Pompei to the Vesuvius path, so from the ruins you go up by shuttle, by car or taxi, or by train and minibus via Ercolano. All three end at the same car park at about 1,000 m, known as Quota 1000, where the walk starts.

By Shuttle from Pompeii

A shuttle is the simplest way up from Pompeii: several operators run minibuses from meeting points in the modern town, with the park ticket booked for you. You need no car, no map and no slot of your own, and the driver handles the mountain road. The next chapter explains how the three hours work and what the shuttles leave out.

By Car or Taxi

With your own car or a taxi you drive to the same upper car park and set your own pace. The road up is narrow, with many bends; a guest who went by minibus said only experienced drivers should take it.

By Train and the Vesuvio Express

Without a car or a tour, take the Circumvesuviana from Pompei Scavi to Ercolano Scavi, about 30 minutes, then the Vesuvio Express minibus up to Quota 1000; it also runs from Naples and includes the park ticket. It is the only public-transport route, but it means a train, a change and a minibus each way, so it suits travelers based in Naples or Herculaneum better than those staying in Pompeii.

Chapter 02

The Vesuvius Shuttle from Pompeii: How the Three Hours Work

A Pompeii shuttle is a transfer, not a guided tour: the bus takes you to the upper car park, hands you the park ticket and waits while you walk at your own pace. The listings share one rhythm, set out below, so the whole trip takes about three hours from the meeting point and back, and the time on the mountain is fixed by the bus, not by you.

Meeting Points and Bags

The shuttles meet in the modern town rather than at the gates of the ruins, and you carry whatever you bring up the path, so leave suitcases at your hotel before you go.

Where the shuttles meet, and bags
  • Via Galileo Ferraris 40, next to the Hotel Ramada: two shuttles
  • Via Roma 32: a third
  • No oversize luggage; on at least one shuttle bags cannot stay on the bus during the walk

Ninety Minutes on the Mountain

Time on the mountain is the one thing guests ask for more of. The review summary of the most-booked shuttle notes that the allotted time feels short and that some guests want 15 to 30 minutes more. Walk up first without long stops, keep the photos for the way down, and note the return time before you start up the path.

No Guide on the Bus

The shuttles carry no guide of their own, but the park provides one: its volcanological guides wait at the top as a free service, and you need to ask for them once you reach the crater edge. A guest who did called the live guides a pleasant surprise. The park also requires groups above 1,000 m to walk with a guide of its permanent Vesuvius service.

Chapter 03

The Vesuvius Park Ticket: Price, Slots and Rules

Everyone who walks up Vesuvius needs the national park's timed ticket, and the park sells it online only, on vesuviopark.vivaticket.it. It costs about €10–12: the park's own page shows both €10.00 and €11.68, with reduced tickets at €8.00 and €9.55. A shuttle books the ticket for you; by car or taxi, buy it before you leave, as it is not sold on the mountain.

Fifty Places Every Ten Minutes

Book as soon as your day is fixed, and choose a slot that leaves time for the drive up from Pompeii.

Tickets Bought Through a Tour

A tour voucher is not the park ticket itself. Ticket-only products send the named ticket separately, usually by WhatsApp the day before; one guest received it only an hour ahead. Bookings made after 18:00 are processed the next morning from 8:00, and reduced tickets for minors are sold only at the park's official office. Download the ticket and any guide app before you go up, because mobile coverage on the mountain is weak.

Vesuvius Opening Hours and the Best Time to Go Up

The path opens at 9:00 all year, but the last access moves with the month, and every visit must end within an hour of it. Check your month before you pick a shuttle time: in winter the volcano lets the last walkers up at 15:00, earlier than the last entry to the ruins of Pompeii, which is 15:30 in winter and 17:30 in summer.

Last access to the path, by month

parconazionaledelvesuvio.it, checked Oct 2026 · «leave by» allows the 40-minute ride and a margin for traffic

Morning or Afternoon

Go up early if your plan allows it. Guests report the path filling up toward mid-morning, and the first slots after 9:00 leave the rest of the day for the ruins. In winter, when the volcano closes first, do Vesuvius in the morning and Pompeii after. From spring to autumn either order works, and an afternoon shuttle lets you walk the ruins in the cooler morning hours.

Chapter 05

Climbing Vesuvius: the Walk from the Car Park

The walk is short but steep: from the upper car park a gravel path climbs in switchbacks toward the rim, with no shade and often wind at the top. The park lists its Gran Cono path at about 4 km return and two and a half hours, rated low difficulty, with its highest point at 1,175 m. On the stretch open now, the climb is much shorter than that estimate, as guests report below.

How Hard It Is

Fitness matters more than skill, and guests disagree on the effort: one calls the climb very physically demanding. The gradient is steepest at the start and the surface is loose volcanic gravel, so the first stretch feels hardest; higher up, another guest found a stone path all the way, with just a few narrow places. Take the bends slowly and stop when you need to.

★★★★★

Coffee, Drinks and Toilets

There are a few places to stop: one listing counts three coffee and gift shops on the way up, one of them at the top, and a parent found a couple of places to buy drinks. A guest describes a small shop in a shed at the bottom that sells coffee and Vesuvius wine and has toilets for customers; another found no toilets along the way, so use them before you start.

What to wear and bring
  • Shoes with grip: the gravel is loose and steep at first; no sandals
  • A windproof layer and a hat: there is no shade, and the top is often windy
  • Water: the tour pages ask you to bring your own
  • A charged phone and headphones if you use a guide app
Chapter 06

What You See from Vesuvius Now

On a clear day the open path looks over the whole Bay of Naples: the shuttle pages name Capri, Ischia, Procida, Naples and Pompeii below you, and the Sorrento coast. Low cloud can hide all of it, even on a day when the path is open, so if the summit is in cloud as you look up from Pompeii, the view from the top will be limited too.

The Crater, in Part

Expect a viewpoint walk, not a circuit of the rim.

Listings that still promise a walk around the rim describe the route as it used to be; guests on the open stretch still report views into the crater and out to sea.

On the Path

Underfoot it is gravel and lava rock, with Mediterranean scrub on the slopes; one Naples listing mentions the scent of broom flowers along the way, and one Pompeii shuttle points out the fumaroles, vents where steam rises from the crater walls. With a guide, the walk becomes a lesson in how the cone formed and how the eruptions shaped the towns below.

Pompeii and Vesuvius in One Day

Pompeii and Vesuvius fit in one day, as long as the volcano's last access sets the plan. On your own, see the ruins in the morning, eat outside, and take an afternoon shuttle, leaving Pompeii by the time the table gives for your month; in winter, reverse the order.

On Your Own from Pompeii

Book the Pompeii ticket and the Vesuvius shuttle first, then plan the day around the shuttle time rather than the other way round. With a morning in the ruins from 9:00, an hour for lunch and the shuttle's three hours, a spring or summer day ends back in Pompeii by late afternoon, with the evening free and no car or connection to manage.

With a Combo Tour from Naples or Sorrento

From Naples or Sorrento, a combo tour joins both sights with the transport between them: usually two to two and a half hours with a guide in Pompeii and about an hour and a half on the volcano. Tours that start on Vesuvius go up early, while the path is cooler and quieter, and reach Pompeii after lunch. Plan on about eight hours and a lot of walking.

Chapter 08

Vesuvius from Naples or Rome, Without Pompeii

If you are based in Naples, or arrive by train from Rome, you do not need to go through Pompeii to reach the volcano. Shuttles from Naples take about an hour each way and leave about two hours on the mountain, a little more than the Pompeii shuttles, and both add a digital or audio guide for the walk.

From Naples Central Station

The easiest start for train travelers is inside Napoli Centrale: one shuttle collects its passengers' tickets at an office on the station's lower floor, so you can arrive from Rome and go straight up. A guest who came from Rome found the meeting point convenient, and another found two and a half hours enough to get up and back down the volcano.

Via Herculaneum

Another Naples shuttle, the shuttle via Herculaneum, drives through Ercolano and gives about two hours on the Gran Cono with an audio guide; guests rate its transport highly. Its booked time is not guaranteed: the office calls the day before with the exact pick-up time, because entry depends on the slots the park grants. Keep that afternoon free rather than booking something tight after it.

Chapter 09

When Vesuvius Closes: Weather and Plan B

The park closes the path at short notice on an orange or higher civil-protection alert, for rain, wind or fog; in October 2026 alone it closed on four days. Plan a day that can bend, and book a shuttle you can cancel: most shuttles refund in full up to 24 hours ahead, while the ticket with a digital guide is non-refundable.

Plan B: Herculaneum or a Wine Tasting

Most shuttles from Pompeii do not simply cancel: if the park closes, they take you to the ruins of Herculaneum instead, and the Naples shuttle via Herculaneum switches to a wine tasting. Light rain alone does not stop every trip; one shuttle goes ahead unless the park's guides judge the climb dangerous. Herculaneum takes about two hours on foot, so it fills the slot well.

★★★★★
“Despite the fact that we had bad luck with the weather and missed Vesuvius, it was a wonderful trip when we went to Herculaneum instead.”
Lars · Oct 2026 · on the full day from Naples or Sorrento

Other Closures

Weather is not the only cause. Events can close the road too: one guest's tour ran into a bike race on Vesuvius that the agency had not mentioned. Check the park's website on the morning of your visit, read the plan B of your shuttle before you book, and if the volcano is the reason for your trip, keep a second day free for it.

Chapter 10

Vesuvius with Children, Limited Mobility or Without the Climb

The walk suits anyone who can manage a steady climb on loose gravel and the same way down. Every shuttle from Pompeii lists it as unsuitable for people with mobility impairments, and the Naples shuttle via Herculaneum adds wheelchair users and people with vertigo or breathing problems, so if any of these applies, the lower slopes are the better choice.

With Children

Children who walk well manage the climb. A parent on the afternoon shuttle from Via Roma reports 25 minutes to the top with a six- and an eight-year-old, on quite steep gravel paths, and a daughter thrilled to stand on a volcano.

Without the Climb: Vesuvius on Horseback

If the gravel climb is too much, a horseback ride shows the volcano's lower slopes instead. Riders meet at a bar on Via Plinio in Pompei, a van takes them up in 30 minutes, and the ride lasts an hour at a walking pace at 400–500 m, with views over the bay and vineyards on volcanic soil. It does not reach the crater rim.

The horseback ride, in practice
  • No riding experience needed
  • Riders six or older, up to 105 kg
  • Helmets and water provided
  • Weather cancellations refunded in full

A family with children of 13 and 10 reports two guides walking beside the children's horses.

Our Advice for Vesuvius from Pompeii

Take a shuttle from Pompeii unless you have a car: it removes the two hard parts of the trip, the mountain road and the timed ticket. Go up as early as your month allows, walk up first and photograph on the way down, and carry a layer for the wind. Expect a viewpoint walk to Capannuccia rather than a circuit of the crater.

On a day with both sights, let Vesuvius set the timing: in winter the volcano first, from spring to autumn the ruins first in the cooler morning. Keep the day flexible for the weather, with Herculaneum as the plan B, and if you are based in Naples or Sorrento, let a combo tour handle the transport between the two.

FAQ

Mount Vesuvius from Pompeii FAQ

Short answers; the chapters above have the detail.

Can you walk from Pompeii to Vesuvius?

No. The path starts at the upper car park, a drive up the mountain from Pompeii; take a shuttle, a taxi or a car.

Can you buy the Vesuvius ticket at the entrance?

No. The park sells its timed, named tickets online only, so buy one before you go up or take a shuttle that includes it.

Can I bring a suitcase on the Vesuvius shuttle?

No. The shuttles do not allow oversize luggage, and on some you carry your bags on the walk, so leave them at your hotel.

Is it worth going up Vesuvius on a cloudy day?

Only if the cloud is lifting. Low cloud can hide the bay and the crater even when the path is open.

Which months are best for Vesuvius?

April, May and September: mild weather and last access at 17:00, which leaves time for the ruins too.

Is Vesuvius still an active volcano?

Yes. The park and the tour pages describe it as active, and steam still rises from fumaroles on the crater walls.

“Despite the fact that we had bad luck with the weather and missed Vesuvius, it was a wonderful trip when we went to Herculaneum instead.”
